Talk by Professor Jérôme Samuel at UBD

Professor Jérôme Samuel, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of INALCO and Head of the Indonesian-Malay Department, delivered a talk at UBD on January 10th : “Beloved Cousins or Enemy Brothers: Which Mutual Intelligibility between Indonesian and Malaysian Languages ?”. Professor Samuel described the sociolinguistic aspects of the different standard and non-standard varieties of Malay such as Malaysian, Indonesian or Jakartanese. Bruneian Malay is another variety of these languages which belong to the same linguistic group. About thirty scholars, linguists, historians or sociologists attended the talk.
