Senate visit to Brunei

A delegation of 4 French Senators visited Brunei Darussalam from May 11 to 13, 2022 where they were welcomed by the Secretary to the Cabinets Minister’s Council & Clerk of the Legislative Council, H.E. Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Hj Judin .

Led by Senator Mathieu Darnaud, Chairman of the Committee for Southeast Asia, the delegation also included Senator Catherine Belhriti, Senator Philippe Mouiller and Senator François Bonhomme.

The delegation met with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, YB Major General Dato Haji Aminuddin Ihsan, the Minister of Energy, YB Dato Haji Mat Suny, the Honourable Attorney General, Haji Ahmad ISA, and the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Hjh Mardiana binti Haji Omar. Hjh Mardiana visited the Regalia Museum and met with the French community at the Residence of France.

The various talks focused on ways to revive, after the Covid 19 pandemic, bilateral economic, cultural, sports and academic cooperation.
Energy issues were discussed in particular in the sensitive context created by the war in Ukraine. In the field of sports, the delegation mentioned the holding of the Olympic Games in Paris, in 2024 and the Rugby World Cup in 2023. Moreover, the Senate should organize at the end of 2022 in Paris, an economic symposium to which Bruneian officials will be invited .
